The object of the essay is to examine what is basically mental in humans as compared to animals. Differences in respect of the concept of will and in respect of the concept of intellect are examined following ideas expressed by Anthony Kenny in The Metaphysics of Mind, and some criticisms are suggested. Accepting the thesis put forward by Edelman as well as by Damasio that a neurological self is necessary for the development of consciousness, a scientific reading is given to (...) Kant�s idea of the self as well as to that of Wittgenstein in the Tractatus. For the same reasons, Wittgenstein�s later rejection of the concept of self is criticized. (shrink)

El presente artículo se basa en una investigación llevada a cabo por profesores de la Universidad Pablo de Olavide de Sevilla, adscritos al Grupo de Investigación de Trabajo Social y Políticas Sociales (Plan Andaluz de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación -Ciencias Sociales, Económicas y Jurídicas (PAIDI, SEJ-452), a lo largo de dos años y dentro del marco de colaboración con la Fundación Mercasevilla. El objeto de dicha investigación ha sido el análisis de la sociabilidad de las personas mayores en el medio (...) urbano desde la sociabilidad a la dependencia. El estudio pone de manifiesto las diferencias existentes en el uso de los espacios según la edad de la población, los déficits que esos espacios muestran, y su relación con la situación de dependencia de las personas mayores. En relación a los datos obtenidos, se plantean conclusiones y orientaciones que pueden resultar de interés a técnicos, investigadores, planificadores del territorio y para aquellos que pueden decidir acerca de políticas que modifiquen el espacio urbano. El equipo de investigación establece una relación directa entre la integración social del colectivo de mayores, con el grado de participación en la sociedad en la que se encuentran, y por tanto, con el uso y acceso a los distintos espacios de sociabilidad, que es en definitiva donde ejercen esta participación social. The relationship between social and financial performance (CSP – FP) has been a main objective in the literature on business management, as it would provide an economic justification for the social investment insofar as it contributes to the creation of value. This relationship has been empirically tested by several authors though without using a theoretical model that sustains this relationship. The aim of this article is to propose a theoretical model of the process of the creation of value from the (...) reputation generated by companies, integrating the factors that have been shown to be more relevant in this process from previous research, in such a way that hypotheses are put forward regarding the existence of this relationship and the factors that determine it. Finally, an empirical test is performed using the 100 most prestigious companies operating in Spain during 2004. (shrink)

Business ethics is one of the most significant demands made by institutional and individual investors, who usually require the participation of the board of directors in the planning and implementation of ethical behaviour in corporations. This is done by drawing up an ethics code and then monitoring its fulfilment. This study has a dual objective: first, to analyse the role played by the composition of the board of directors, and by that we mean its independence and the diversity of its (...) members, on the implementation and scope of an EC, and, second, to detect whether the corporate governance system moderates the level of involvement of the board in ethical issues. The findings obtained from a data panel sample made up of 760 listed companies from 12 countries for the years 2003–2009 show that the largest companies with large-sized and diverse boards implement the most developed ECs. Nevertheless, the extent of involvement of the independent directors is conditioned by the level of shareholder orientation characteristic of the system of CG in the corporation’s country of origin. BackgroundMonitoring recovery–stress balance in sport is becoming more relevant to prevent training maladaptation and reach the optimal performance for each athlete. The use of questionnaires that identify the athlete’s recovery–stress state have much acceptance in sports due to reliability and useful, furthermore for its low cost. Identifying possible differences between sport modalities and sex is important to determine specific needs and possible intervention ways to keep a recovery–stress balance. The aim was to analyze the differences in the recovery–stress state and (...) mood states by sex and sport type during the competitive phase in young Mexican athletes. As a secondary objective, the psychometric properties of the Mexican version of the Recovery–Stress Questionnaire for Athletes were analyzed.MethodsA cross-sectional study was carried on with 461 athletes, 17.95 years old, from six sports disciplines. The RESTQ-Sport and Profile of Mood States were applied in a single moment. Differences by sex and sports modality were analyzed. RESTQ-Sport’s confirmatory factor analysis was performed after the stress and recovery theoretical structure of two stress and two recovery dimensions, and last, the concurrent validation with the POMS was carried on.ResultsSignificant differences by sex were found in the General Recovery and Sport Stress dimensions of the RESTQ-Sport as well as Vigor factor of the POMS, being higher for men; furthermore, both the Sport Recovery dimension of RESTQ-Sport and Cholera and the Fatigue and Depression factors from POMS also had differences by sport type, showing a less recovery and high stress for individual sport athletes. Goodness-of-fit indexes of the model for the RESTQ-Sport were acceptable. Pearson’s correlation between questionnaires was moderate.ConclusionThe recovery–stress state shows differences in the function of sex and sport modality. More special attention is suggested for women and individual sport athletes. The higher punctuation for men compared with women in sport stress dimension did not negatively affect the recovery–stress balance for male athletes. Finally, the Mexican context adaptation of the RESTQ-Sport provides a psychometric instrument suitable to assess the recovery–stress balance in Mexican athletes. (shrink)

There is no consensus in the literature about the nature of terrorism. The authors’ main claim is that this is ultimately the result of the coexistence of two senses of the term, the action and the actor sense, which are not fully congruent. Rather than trying to advocate a specific conceptualization, the authors provide in this article a map of the different ways in which scholars talk about terrorism. They identify first the set of terrorist actions and the set of (...) terrorist actors. Terrorist tactics are a variety of the power to hurt, based on the lack of military power. Terrorist groups are underground ones with no territorial control. When the two criteria meet, the core of terrorism exists: coercive violence perpetrated by underground groups. The ambiguity that surrounds terrorism is caused by two other possibilities: actors with some measure of territorial control adopting coercive tactics and underground actors adopting military tactics. Although it is not possible to remove this ambiguity in empirical research, scholars can at least identify it and analyze it. The authors illustrate the two senses of terrorism and their interaction by using the most comprehensive dataset on terrorist incidents, the Global Terrorism Database. (shrink)

This article seeks to provide a reflection based on philosophy and sociology around the occupation, if any, of the humanities. According to the hermeneutics of founding texts on the question “What is man?” and on various perspectives on it, a reflection is configured that aims to sustain what, in the author's view, corresponds to be the basic and determining occupation of the humanities. For this, five sections will be developed in which an introduction to some basic ideas about the humanities, (...) foundations of a philosophical anthropology, what is man from the study of sociology, what is man from the study of biology and neurosciences, and the humanities as a whole are exposed. The article aims to contribute to the understanding that cultivating the humanities and developing them requires an intention to make them a conceptual and unfinished representation of the world, not a piece of ductile clay in the image and likeness of those who see in them the stage of praxis by excellence. It is mainly concluded that the relevance, the very nature of the humanities, lies in broadening the spectrum of questions about what is man, before attempting to provide complete answers, so that, at the very moment in which the crucial question “What is man?” is found a finished answer and it becomes law, not only is a resolved question left, but also a meaningless life. This article examines the role of the Spanish Atomic Forum as the representative of the nuclear sector in the public arena during the golden years of the nuclear power industry from the 1960s to 1970s. It focuses on the public image concerns of the Spanish nuclear lobby and the subsequent information campaigns launched during the late 1970s to counteract demonstrations by the growing and heterogeneous anti-nuclear movement. The role of advocacy of nuclear energy by the Atomic Forum was similar to (...) that in other countries, but the situation in Spain had some distinguishing features. Anti-nuclear protest in Spain peaked in 1978 paralleling the debates of a new National Energy Plan in Congress, whose first draft had envisaged a massive nuclearization of the country. We show how the approval of the Plan in July 1979, with a significant reduction in the nuclear energy component, was influenced by the anti-nuclear protest movements in Spain. Despite the efforts of the Spanish Atomic Forum to counter its message, the anti-nuclear movement was strengthened by reactions to the Three Mile Island accident in March 1979. (shrink)

The present study aims to apply a program based on Hellison’s Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility Model (TPSR), traditionally used in Physical Education, to other educational subjects and examine the assessment of the teachers who carried it out during the 2018-2019 school year. The program was applied over eight months of one academic year and during at least 60% of the weekly class hours. Initially, 586 students participated, 429 being experimental subjects with 30 teachers, of whom 16 participated in the (...) interviews carried out, all of them being Secondary Education teachers. We used qualitative methodology through content analysis carried out with ATLAS.ti 7.1.3. The instruments used to collect information were semi-structured recorded group interviews. The conclusion is that the Personal and Social Responsibility Model can be applied to all subjects in the curriculum and is adaptable to any content and type of student body. As a basis for future research, we suggest the application of the model by all teachers involved in the same school year and the participation of students’ families. (shrink)

Los estudios e investigaciones en español sobre las relaciones entre la literatura y el cine están conociendo una edad de oro. A lo largo de todo un siglo, abundan los desencuentros entre los escritores y el mundo profesional del cine, insatisfechos con las adaptaciones o sus contratos como guionistas. En la segunda mitad del siglo XX surge una nueva generación de escritores cinéfilos para quienes el cine es fuente de inspiración y de temas para su literatura; en algunos casos esa (...) obra no se comprende ni se concibe sin el trasfondo del universo del cine. Más allá de estos literatos están los escritores-cineastas, esto es, creadores que se expresan con la misma facilidad y entidad estética en obras escritas y en películas. La contraposición o rivalidad entre la literatura y el cine deja de tener sentido en el caso de obras en las que se produce un encuentro en el diálogo entre distintos niveles de discurso y en la oposición de mundos realistas y de ficción. The Epistemological Turn of the Twentieth Century’s Legal Positivism This article analyses the essential changes in the positivist law theory from its modern origins, usually remitted to Hobbes, Bentham and Austin, to the positivism of Kelsen and Hart. It is argued that a crucial epistemological break can be noticed, revealed in the most analytic-rationalistic character of Kelsen and Hart’s elaborations, compared to the more facts-descriptive style of their predecessors. Rationalism in Kelsen and Hart may explain the conventional character of the (...) basic norm and the rule of recognition, validity only formally, and the difficulty of accounting for the formal and substantive components. The change can be associated with Kelsen and Hart’s intellectual context, particularly Hume’s ‘guillotine’, the influences of logical positivism and neo-Kantian schools. This turn should not be overlooked since it casts doubts on the usual speaking of Kelsen and Hart’s legal positivism in the descriptive sense of nineteenth-century philosophers, with relevant consequences for thinking of law. Se exponen las razones para la búsqueda de una interpretación de la teoría cuántica que resuelva los problemas de la «ortodoxa» (interpretación de Copenhague), en particular el de la necesidad de postular la existencia de ciertos entes no cuánticos, los observadores. A tal fin, se presentan las líneas esenciales de la interpretación de los muchos-universos y de la moderna formulación de la mecánica cuántica en términos de historias consistentes, haciendo énfasis en el interés de esta última en cosmología cuántica.

En el siguiente artículo trataremos de analizar en el tiempo las diferentes prohibiciones que se han producido a lo largo de la historia contra la que, para García Lorca, es la fiesta más culta del mundo. Prohibiciones de las que, unas más severas que otras, la Fiesta siempre ha logrado salir adelante y las cuales hemos de tenerlas en cuenta en los difíciles tiempos actuales en que esta se encuentra. Lo decía Ortega y Gasset: “No puede comprenderse bien la historia (...) de España sin haber construido la historia de las corridas de toros”. Por tanto, el análisis que a continuación se detalla no hace más que resaltar la enorme importancia que, desde tiempos inmemoriales, esta tradición ha tenido para el pueblo español y, a pesar de las prohibiciones, no consiguieron acabar con su celebración debido a su profundo arraigo en las raíces de España. Se esboza, a su vez, el papel que ocupa la escritura privada en torno a la obra tanto de la destinataria como de cada uno de los remitentes entre los que se encuentra Carlos Fuentes, Carlos Monsiváis, José Carlos Becerra, Elena Poniatowska y Sergio Pitol; para señalar algunas coordenadas de lectura de esta cartografía epistolar.

In order to do this, we shall analyse the evolution of the number of ethical funds offered, the growth of its assets, its size, the typology of commercialised funds, and the main companies included in its investment portfolios, showing the importance that socially responsible mutual funds are gaining in Europe over these first few (...) years of the 21st century. "Crónica à clef" es fruto de la lectura a Estrella de dos puntas (Ariel, 2021), libro reconocido con el Premio Xavier Villaurrutia, que presenta una disertación basada en la investigación epistolar entre Carlos Fuentes y Octavio Paz. Gracias al seguimiento, Malva Flores propone algunas conclusiones que generarán un debate en la discusión sobre el campo cultural en México.

El texto presenta los fundamentos filosóficos con los cuales configurar una filosofía latinoamericana que apuntale un proyecto de filosofía de la educación desde la educación popular. Esto se hace a partir del examen de la reflexión filosófica de Leopoldo Zea y Amado Osorio. Para ello, se desarrolla en torno a la presunta existencia de una filosofía latinoamericana, pensamiento filosófico latinoamericano, un presunto acuerdo sobre filosofía, una filosofía de la educación en América Latina y una filosofía de la educación como baluarte (...) de una educación filosófica en América Latina. El texto concluye, además, que una filosofía latinoamericana no tiene por qué tener como condición su ruptura con el pensar del hombre genérico; solo se trata de reconocer sus problemas vitales para aportar claridad reflexiva y actuar sobre ellos con respuestas, incluso, inspiradoras para otros pueblos.
